Explore 1,000+ colleges through PCG's strategic lens

Find schools worth applying to.

Most college search tools show you sticker price and acceptance rate. We show you the strategic picture — admissions selectivity, negotiation leverage, graduation outcomes, and how cost scales with income — so you can build a smart application list. Once you've narrowed your options, our other tools handle the personalized math.

Build your exploration set

Narrow the field by what matters strategically. For personalized cost estimates, run the True Cost Calculator on any school in your shortlist.

California resident
Affects how we display out-of-state public school costs. Out-of-state public university prices in our dataset reflect in-state students; if you're a CA resident looking at UMich, UVA, UNC, etc., expect to pay $15K-$30K more per year than shown.
School location preference
Public or private
Selectivity (acceptance rate)
Cost tier (full-pay families)
Based on the school's average net cost for high-income families ($110K+ band). Lower-income families typically pay significantly less than shown here at need-based aid schools. For your family's actual cost, run the True Cost Calculator.
Negotiation leverage
Tap to toggle. High Partner Leverage schools respond to appeals. Very Low Merit Movement schools (Ivies, MIT, top liberal arts) don't move on merit but offer strong need-based aid.
Minimum six-year graduation rate No minimum
Six-year graduation rate is the single best outcome proxy. National average is ~62%; schools below 50% are worth scrutinizing.

How the Atlas works

Methodology

The Atlas is an exploration tool, not a price quote. We show historical averages so you can compare schools strategically — then run the True Cost Calculator on your shortlist for personalized numbers.

Cost ranges, not quotes
For each school, we show the range of net cost across income brackets — lowest band ($0–30K) to highest ($110K+). This gives families an honest directional view of how aid scales with income. For your family's actual cost, use the True Cost Calculator.
Negotiation leverage tier
PCG's proprietary classification. High Partner Leverage schools respond to appeals; Very Low Merit Movement schools (Ivies, MIT, top liberal arts) don't negotiate on merit but offer strong need-based aid.
Out-of-state public schools
Costs shown for public universities reflect in-state students. For CA residents looking at non-CA publics, expect to pay $15K–$30K more per year than displayed — exact surcharge varies by school. We flag this with a banner on each public school dossier.
Data confidence tiers
Each school is tagged verified, standard, or low. Verified schools are in PCG's primary 114-school dataset with full 2026-27 calibration. Low-confidence schools have data quality flags — searchable below but excluded from default ranking.
No-merit overrides
38 schools (Ivies, MIT, top liberal arts colleges) are confirmed to offer zero institutional merit aid. Where raw IPEDS data showed merit values for them, we zeroed those out — those values were likely external scholarship flow-through, not real institutional merit.
When to use which tool
Use the Atlas to find schools worth applying to. Use the True Cost Calculator for personalized cost estimates. Use Merit Aid Strategy for merit-focused planning. Use the Award Letter Decoder once letters arrive.
