UC evaluates 14 factors including GPA, course rigor, special talents, leadership, community service, geography, first-generation status, socioeconomic context, and work/family responsibilities. No formula — each weighed in context.
Why your school matters as much as your GPA
UC readers know your high school's grade distributions and course offerings. A 4.0 at a rigorous school and a 4.0 at a less rigorous school are evaluated very differently. Taking the hardest available courses is the critical signal.
No recs + no interviews = PIQs do everything
Because the UC has no recommendation letters and no alumni interviews, the four PIQ responses are where character, context, initiative, and potential campus contribution all live. They are read as structured short interviews.
Same student, same campus, very different outcomes by major
Impacted majors at Berkeley and UCLA can have single-digit acceptance rates. CS at UC San Diego admits below 5%. Declaring biology vs. CS at the same campus produces dramatically different admission results.

The UC recalculates your GPA using only 10th and 11th grade academic courses, adds 1 point for each honors/AP/IB course (max 8 semesters), and uses letter grades without plus/minus.
UC awards 1 extra grade point for UC-approved honors, AP, and IB courses — capped at 8 semesters. A B in AP earns 4.0. An A in AP earns 5.0. This can significantly elevate your UC GPA.
UCLA/Berkeley: typically 4.15+ weighted. UCSD/UCI: 4.0+. Davis/UCSB: 3.7–3.9. UC Riverside, Santa Cruz, Merced: 3.0+ with strong holistic factors.
The UC GPA uses only 10th and 11th grade courses. A difficult freshman year does NOT affect your UC GPA — one of the most misunderstood and most important facts in UC admissions.
Zero tuition for California families under $100K income
California families earning under $100,000 with assets under $500,000 pay zero UC systemwide tuition. Automatic with FAFSA — no separate application. Applies at all 9 UC campuses.
Extends aid to families earning up to $250,000
The MCS covers up to 35% of UC systemwide tuition on a sliding scale for California families. Income and asset ceiling: $250,000 each (2026–27). Covers UC and CSU. File FAFSA by March 2 — no separate application.
Cal Grant A at UC: $14,934 · Family of 4 ceiling: $144,700
Cal Grant A at UC covers full systemwide tuition: $14,934 (2026–27). Cal Grant B: $1,648 year 1, $16,582 years 2–4 at UC. Asset ceiling: $111,900 for dependent students. GPA minimum 3.0 for Cal Grant A. File FAFSA + GPA verification by March 2.

Listing an alternate major gives readers a second path to admit you. At impacted campuses, a strategic alternate can meaningfully increase your odds — sometimes by 2x or more.
Never write four essays about the same activity. Readers should see four different dimensions: academic passion, a challenge, leadership or community impact, and something unique to you.
One application, up to 9 campuses. Each evaluates independently — applying to UCLA doesn't affect Berkeley's review. Strong applicants typically apply to 4–6 campuses.
Blue & Gold + Cal Grant + MCS — most families leave money on the table by not knowing all three exist and can stack. The March 2 FAFSA deadline is non-negotiable for all three.
Answer the prompt in the first sentence. UC readers evaluate for clarity, context, initiative, and impact — not literary flair. Delayed reveals and flowery prose hurt more than they help.
A difficult 9th grade does not appear in the UC GPA calculation. Students who struggled freshman year start fresh at 10th in the UC formula — most families never know this.
UC awards bonus points for approved honors/AP/IB in 10th and 11th grade only (max 8 semesters). A strategic AP course selection in these two years significantly elevates your UC weighted GPA.
Missing the March 2 FAFSA deadline permanently disqualifies California students from Cal Grant and the Middle Class Scholarship — potentially costing $5,000–$15,000 per year for all four years.
