How to Apply for Financial Aid

Deadlines matter. Missing them can cost you thousands of dollars in funding.

📋 FAFSA Opens October 1 →
🏫 What is CSS Profile? →
1

Complete FAFSA

File in December of senior year using your base year (prior-prior year) taxes

2

Check for CSS Profile

Many private colleges require this in addition to FAFSA — check each school individually

3

Meet ALL Deadlines

Priority deadlines vary by school; late applications receive significantly less funding

4

Determine Custodial Parent

Especially important for divorced/separated families — directly impacts your SAI

5

Understand Base Year Taxes

2026–27 school year uses 2024 taxes. 2027–28 uses 2025 taxes.

3 Questions to Ask Every Financial Aid Office
Most families never ask these — and it costs them dearly. Click each to see why it matters.
01

What percentage of demonstrated need do you meet?

Some schools meet 100%, others only 30–40%. This single number is the biggest driver of your real cost.

02

What percentage of aid is Gift Aid vs. Self-Help?

Gift Aid (grants/scholarships) is free money. Self-Help (loans/work-study) must be repaid or earned.

03

What is your 4-year graduation rate?

Every extra year costs a full year of tuition. Schools with low 4-year rates can cost $30K–$100K more.
